The Twin Cities gets Tony
Awards®?
We're
blessed to have hundreds of theatre options in Minnesota. From
talented high school renditions of the "war horses" to countless
versions of thought-provoking "experimental" theatre; plus everything
in between.
It's no surprise that the Twin Cities would end
up with an awards ceremony celebrating the vast cultural asset
that is the Theatre Community. Introducing..The American
Express Ivey Awards!
What are the Ivey Awards? Well, besides
a nostalgic nod to the favorite gathering place of the Twin Cities'
theater crowd a century ago at Sixth Street and Nicollet Avenue
in downtown Minneapolis, the Ivey
Awards celebration event is an event staged in the fall
honoring Twin Cities professional theatrical productions from
throughout the previous year (September to September). The
annual celebration includes entertainment provided by the Twin
Cities theater community, locally and nationally noted hosts,
and special recognition of theater organizations and individuals.
The first event will take place in the Fall of 2005.
The Ivey Awards differ from the Tony
Awards (but
are similar to the Jeff
Awards in Chicago) in that
there are no nominees, pre-determined award categories or set
number of awards. Recognition is awarded and formulated by those
in the Twin Cities who love theater in addition to 75 volunteer
evaluators.
One important award of the recognition ceremony
is determined by members of the theater-going public. (You.)
Visit the Ivey Awards website and vote for any show
you see during the course of the year that is eligible for recognition.
Details on how to vote and which shows are eligible are available
on the website.
